December 2011

Dear Grade 4 Parents,

At your child’s December workshop, we briefly went over chapters 7 and 8 in their workbooks as we viewed a wonderful DVD on The Nativity in celebration of Jesus’ birth.  We kindly ask you spend some time with your child on these chapters at home so they have a fuller understanding of the chapter lessons.

The learning goals and chapter highlights area were as follows:

Chapter 7 –  Kingdom & Beatitudes

-Understand that true happiness lies in being concerned with what matters to God.

-Learn the Beatitudes from Matthew’s Gospel.

- Discover ways to live the Beatitudes.

Highlights:  The Catechism of the Catholic Church refers to the significance of the Beatitudes in discipleship.  It talks about the Beatitudes as indispensable for moral formation, the spirit that must permeate the Ten Commandments and the heart of Jesus’ preaching.  The Beatitudes are God’s response to our natural desire for happiness which God placed in the human heart.  Only God can satisfy this desire for happiness.

Chapter 8 –  Thy Kingdom Come

-Understand that we are part of the kingdom of God, especially during Mass.

-Identify the Lord’s Prayer as a prayer that Jesus taught us.

-Explore ways in which the world’s justice is not the same as God’s justice.

Highlights:  Through the parables in the Gospel of Luke, Jesus explains how to pray.  Prayer requires faith in      God and in his promise of salvation.  In praying it is important to approach God with humility,   asking for God’s mercy.  The Lord’s Prayer is a prayer of faith and hope in Jesus’ return at the end of time.  It demonstrates our patience as we await for the coming of the kingdom of God.

For our January session, please work with your child on the following Family Time Pages   and bring in January to share with others in the group.   (Chapter 9 – “The Holy Spirit Guides Us” pages 93/94 and Chapter 10 “Confirmed in the Spiritpages 101/102).

We kindly ask to please initial that your child has completed his/her homework on the chart found on the inside front cover of the workbook. The catechists will be checking that it has been completed.

Our Good Samaritan item for January is canned soup.
